A4 monochrome printer with a speed of 53 pages per minute. The T654 can take extra high yield cartridges with a capacity up to 35,000 pages and has a 550 sheet main input tray as well as the 100 sheet multifunction tray.

Memory is unusually large as well- 256MB base and 1280 MB Maximum, matched with a 600MHz processor.

The T654 is part of a long series of "workgroup" monochrome laser printers starting with the T610 series. The T650 to T654 group use a rather different engine called the "4061" but the same general approach based round a large single piece print cartridge.

Print Speed:

Printer speed depends on both the computer, communication path and printer. Printers will most nearly meet the rated speed when printing plain text for an inbuilt font. Printers may be slower when handling heavily graphical images such as full-page photos and (less self evidently) bitmapped PDFs. The large 256MB base memory on this printer will be adequate for all but the most demanding tasks. Note that PCL tends to be faster and less memory hungry than PostScript. If the printer does slow down when handling a succession of heavily grphical pages expanding the memory should help; the maximum capacity is 1280 MB.

Print Resolution:

The human eye can distinguish resolution down to about 300dpi and lines down to about 0.01mm. At 1200 dpi the printer is capable of fine lines and its best black and white photographic reproduction but may be slower. There is a tradeoff between speed and resolution.

Consumables:

The printing process consumes toner which it supplied in convenient single-piece print cartridges. The T654 can take ordinary 7,000 page yield cartridges, a high yield 25,000 page version and an extra-high yield 35,000 page version. Much less frequently at 300,000 page intervals the printer will need a maintenance kit which replaces the fuser and several rollers.

The T650 takes cartridges with an average yield of 7,000 and 25,000 pages (at 5% cover). Average standard page yield value declared in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.
